Fred Newman Honored with Esteemed New York Law Journal Lifetime Achievement Award
New York, NY—July 1, 2020—Hoguet Newman Regal & Kenney, LLP founding partner Fred Newman has received the New York Law Journal’s 2020 Lifetime Achievement award. The annual award honors professionals who have made an impact on the legal community and the practice of law over an entire career. Fred is one of only nine attorneys honored.
Fred’s long and celebrated career as a commercial trial lawyer has included many high-profile litigation wins. Most recently, he secured a $126 million trial decision in a precedent-setting trademark licensing suit involving royalties to be paid for using the iconic Palm restaurant intellectual property. Shortly after the trial decision, New York Commercial Division Justice Andrea Masley ordered defendants to pay $4.6 million in attorney’s fees and expenses to HNRK for its successful prosecution of the case. In her fees ruling, Judge Masley praised Fred for his leadership on the case, noting that his trial skills were “extraordinary.” In other groundbreaking cases, he served as lead counsel for Market Data Corporation in a suit against Dow Jones that settled before trial for $202 million, and successfully defended Paula Zahn’s talent agent in a highly-visible suit by Fox News after she left for CNN immediately before the 9/11 attacks, creating the right of first negotiation that is commonly used today.
Before founding HNRK with Laura Hoguet and Dorothea Regal in 1996, Fred was vice president and general counsel of Philip Morris USA, then a ten-billion-dollar public company. An early proponent of strong and active general counsels, he also helped establish the New York Chapter of the American Corporate Counsel Association as a founding director and vice president.
Today, HNRK is one of New York’s oldest and most successful women-owned law firms, recognized internationally as a leading litigation boutique.
“This humbling recognition belongs to our firm. Our decades of the highest quality performance and client satisfaction reflect the vision of my co-founding partners Laura Hoguet and Dorsey Regal, as well as the many talented lawyers with whom I have had the honor of working as colleagues. The Law Journal’s Award acknowledges HNRK in the ranks of New York’s leading litigation boutiques, and the firm’s future is indeed bright as we have a robust next generation of lifetime achievers. I’m thrilled that my partner Helene Hechtkopf is being honored by the Law Journal this year as a “Rising Star” at the same ceremony.”
Fred and Helene will be featured in the New York Law Journal’s upcoming Professional Excellence issue.
